New federal rules threaten to obstruct scientific research

Medical research, like that done at CERID, is under threat by changes to federal rules on how grants are funded. For decades, peer review by scientific experts decided which grant applications would be prioritized for funding. The new rules will insert political appointees as the final decision-makers. Excellent grants may go unfunded or terminated in mid-cycle based on politicized views about the subject matter or grievances against the applicant’s institution. The rules will also severely limit funding for publications, attending conferences, and collaborating with foreign investigators.
