Dr. David Koelle is Principal Investigator and Dr. Christine Johnston is Co-Investigator on a newly awarded R21, “Local B Cell Response to Recurrent Varicella Zoster Virus Infection.”

The project is based on their data that zoster rash skin contains virus-specific B lymphocytes-- recombinant human monoclonal antibodies derived from these cells have potent anti-viral activities. The goal of the grant is to prioritize and optimize these antibodies for use as a preventative medication for people at risk for severe complications of VZV infection, and in particular to replace the current gamma globulin product given to pregnant women who are at risk for transmission of VZV to the child.
