Know What to Wear When
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is an important aspect of chemical hygiene and biosafety but only when used properly and in a manner that protects everyone.
- You must be wearing closed-toed shoes and pants or long skirt to enter the lab space.
- Nitrile gloves are a good, general-use glove for many lab procedures. No glove protects against all chemical hazard, always check a chemical's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) prior to handling.
- Latex may cause an allergic reaction in some people. Latex is also generally fairly poor with regards to chemical resistance.
- For most chemical and biohazard handling, it is recommended that you wear safety glases or goggles.
- Lab coats should be worn for applications that pose a risk of splashing or splattering onto exposed skin.
- All PPE must remain in the lab space and should not come in contact with common use objects such as door handles and phones. PPE should never be used outside of the lab, including to transport materials. Use a secondary containment device to transport hazardous materials.
